The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.
The ex-president was found guilty of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than 27 years in prison, but he continued under house arrest pending court reviews.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" were revealed.
This included attempting to break his tracking device and a call for a public vigil that could enable a chance to flee".
Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns
In a filing authorising the custody, the magistrate said intelligence from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his getaway".
This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his child.
His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a legislator, called for a assembly of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.
His son wrote on online platforms on Friday: Will you battle for your nation, or see it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I urge you to fight with us."
He said the demonstration would be so backers could "pray for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of the magistrate's determination was the possibility of Bolsonaro's "relocation to embassies near the residence, considering that the probes revealed a history of planning to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.
The legal document highlights that the United States embassy in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is situated around 13km from his dwelling.
International Reactions
His judicial problems have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative US President Donald Trump, prompting him to impose a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.
He is being detained in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will have a detention review on the next day.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with tracking devices.
They also petitioned that the former president be permitted to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he demanded ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other ailments.
Details of Guilty Verdict
Bolsonaro was convicted of heading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
High Court judges said that he knew of a plot which involved plans to assassinate his opponent and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing the former president's case.
The plot was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the support of the armed forces officials. The current president was sworn in without problem on January 1st, 2023.
But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged official structures in the capital, Brazil's capital.
The law enforcement took action and around 1,500 people were detained.
The justices found that the protesters had been provoked by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, bring back stability and return him to office.
At the moment, his attorneys called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.
He was also barred from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.
The ex-leader called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the 2026 national vote.
