Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several entry passages leading to the depot... preliminary assessments are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with our partners, to eliminate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS after its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their valour," he said. "They were part of numerous British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove militants who threaten our security, shows how British military are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates IS still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
