The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Whenever a major prize-giving event draws close, you'll find a demand to include of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of followers dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator has already made supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing above others. The demand is this: We need an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications successfully include numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked completely in 2014
  • Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment that year
  • Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as the most-played games globally continuing this trend for many years.

The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and engaging across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these represent titles that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier game development, creating some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
